Winter months can wreak havoc on the entire body, and your mouth is no exception. Cold winter weather can cause any part of the body that is exposed to suffer. Because the face must be uncovered most of the time, it is very susceptible to the harsh effects of cold, dry winter air. While you are spending your winter in and out of homes, schools and work locations here in Manhattan, it is important to protect your mouth by prepping it for cold winter temperatures.
New York residents have the opportunity to enjoy a great deal of snow. While not every day is postcard perfect, there are times when sledding, tobogganing, snowball fights, and playing in the snow are simply too fun to pass up. Of course, there are also many days when simply walking from the car to the front door can seem like a battle: you against the blizzard. During these fun times and not so fun times, harsh winter conditions can wreak havoc on your lips, cheeks, gums, and entire mouth.
Chapped lips are one of the most common complaints of harsh winter conditions. Exposure to wind, cold, and sun creates the perfect environment for dry lips. It is important to keep your lips protected by wearing a lip balm that contains an SPF of 15 or higher and by applying it often. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can also stave off chapped lips. Water is necessary for hydrating the skin of the entire body, but because winter weather is so cold people often forget to drink enough water.
The mouth is also more susceptible to developing canker sores and cold sores during winter. Indulging in foods with a high acid content can aggravate the sensitive tissues of the mouth and cause canker sores to set in. Spending more time inside with others is also a recipe for cold sores. Because cold sores are caused by a virus, tighter quarters with more people cooped indoors makes it easier for cold viruses and cold sores to spread. Making sure to keep your distance from others and not sharing drinks, utensils, and lip balm will help protect you from germs.
